Kharagpur, West Bengal
The first of the IITs, offering one of the widest ranges of undergraduate and postgraduate engineering, architecture, and management programs.
IIT Kharagpur, founded in 1951, is the first and oldest IIT. It started in the historic Hijli detention camp building in West Bengal and has one of the largest campuses among the IITs. Alongside engineering, it offers programs that most IITs do not, including law (Rajiv Gandhi School of Intellectual Property Law), medical sciences and architecture. Campus life is built around a large hall-of-residence culture, with Spring Fest and Kshitij as its flagship festivals.
